It had a lot going for it: Vampires, New Orleans, the 1990s setting complete with fun pop culture references. I struggle to visualise scenes in books and I always fall asleep if there’s heavy descriptions in them. The author has been very vocal about her love for New Orleans when promoting the book, and that affection shines through on the page. I may be biased for adoring this book so much as it IS about my favourite supernatural AND the MC’s are from Yorkshire like me but I had sooooo much fun reading this!

If you are looking for a fun, fast paced story about vampires in the amazing setting that is New Orleans, you need to pick this up.It’s on my bucket list to visit New Orleans one day and experience a slice of its rich history and culture. For instance, one of the villains is a character we met only once before for two sentences who isn't even given any motivation for their crimes. The author uses 200 pages to set the story up with Mina exploring New Orleans and hearing about the murders.

It is such an atmospheric presence throughout, equal parts alluring and dangerous, and I can’t help but feel that the setting plays a major role in how well the book works. Having said that, many of the references are broad enough so that the target audience of the book will hardly be lost. I really enjoyed how this story had actual legends and myths of New Orleans interwoven throughout this very unique tale. As she delves deeper into the myths and legends of old Orleans, she must face her demons, and those of her family. Dark, delicious and grusome, this is the perfect YA horror, not just for teens, but also 30 somethings who enjoyed 90s culture the first time around!Mina must discover the truth and prove her sister’s innocence before she becomes the victim of another myth. I’ve honestly enjoyed it every time and even having learnt the twists after the first read, the plot is strong and you realise the easter egg clues you previously missed. The characters were interesting, although I did think that Della and Lucas were a little less fleshed out than Jared, Libby and Mina. The story is set in the early 90s and Mina’s older sister works in a movie inspired haunted house attraction, with rooms dedicated to Pennywise, Freddy Kruger and Leatherface. After their mother abandoned them, Mina and Libby went to live with their Aunt, who remained emotionally distant from the girls.

I’m so glad vampires are making a comeback as I love vampiric myths and seeing how authors put their own twist on them. My obsession only became stronger as time went on with Bela Lugosi, David from The Lost Boys, and the list goes on. On her first trial day at the Horror Mansion there is an accident that will trigger a series of events that will put Mina in great danger. Its chapter lengths are relatively short to allow for reading breaks (but the chapter cliffhangers make it hard to put down). A perfectly executed eerie YA Gothic Horror with twists and turns aplenty and bursting with 90s references to fully lure you into New Orleans Fang Fest 1995! On her first night in Louisiana, Libby takes Mina to work with her at The Mansion Of The Macabre, a house which puts on an interactive horror movie style show for guests.
