The album balances the sweeping vistas of a 64-piece orchestra with cool jazz-funk grooves, tarted-up Screamin' Jay Hawkins covers with a pair of Jeff Buckley tunes and a gentle reading of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow. What Do You Want seems like it is going to be easily forgotten until finally Beck appears and you start to wonder, my God, did this guy already play like this in 1966?

For jazzier edges and funkier grooves, Jeff employed the likes of keyboardist Max Middleton and singer Bob Tench in an effort to shed the heavy metal image and make not only a more accessible sound, but a greater platform of freedom for Jeff to get closer to that sound he was restlessly pursuing; there are moments of this when the group ventures into extended, funk-inflected, reflective jazzy instrumental sections. Initially recorded in 1966 with Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones and Keith Moon on drums, Beck’s Bolero not only displayed his peerlessly sublime tone and ability to absorb all manner of styles into his playing –classical, garage rock, baroque psychedelia, proto prog, nascent heavy metal and more are swept up in under three minutes – but also drew up an astonishingly ahead of its time blueprint for the journey music would take post-Sgt Pepper. In his final dozen years he would release two more albums: Loud Hailer, aided and abetted by Carmen Vandenberg and Rosie Bones from Camden Town hopefuls Bones UK, before his final album 18 arrived in 2022, recorded with actor/musician Johnny Depp.

Jeff Beck made his mark with the landmark album Truth, an album that was every bit as great as Led Zeppelin in its heaviness, and acoustic breaks as well. Little is known of what Jeff Beck occupied himself with during that time, which is probably why this album serves as more of a reminder that he is still around, less of a grand stylistic statement. He released numerous studio, live, compilation, video and soundtrack albums during his career, as well as over twenty singles. Having a Rave Up was released in November 1965 in the US and was not an album as such, but a strange compilation of singles, since the time Beck had joined the group in March of that year. Otherwise, the ensemble tackles the blues and hard rock motifs amid Beck's crunching chord clusters, animated lines, and soaring heavenward soloing on the lovely and somewhat ethereal ballad titled "Two Rivers. To say that Jeff Beck is running out of ideas on 'Jeff', the third album in his electronica trilogy, would be unfair; it is quite clear that the man could churn out albums in the vein for the remainder of the decade if he'd like to.

This is a bit of a toss up, but it’s important as it re-introduces us to new Jeff Beck music, a fresh new approach with the help of Nile Rodgers on production. That does not mean that this final offering under the Jeff Beck Group banner should be dismissed as a mere transitional piece to greater things. Beck-Ola did not enter the Gaon Album Chart, but it peaked at number 33 on the component overseas album chart in 2014. After Les passed away, Jeff Beck decided to honor the great man and set up a concert that has to be heard. The best album credited to Jeff Beck is Truth which is ranked number 1,449 in the overall greatest album chart with a total rank score of 1,195. S. Bonds and Trombone Shorty to the show, and a showdown show ender with Brian Setzer as they play a furious version of Eddie Cochran’s “Twenty Flight Rock”. Written by Stevie Wonder, this slow-burning, brooding number from 1975’s Blow By Blow shows the sheer depth of emotion Beck could wring from his instrument. His technique consisted of furiously intricate playing modified by various electronic gadgets that later influenced every genre from heavy metal to jazz-rock. Showing that his antennae for changes in music was as sensitive as ever as he approached his sixties, Beck’s first regular studio album in ten years saw him embracing electronic, techno and ambient music.
