I know that I'll have to read over 20 books to get up to date with her but, based on this one, it will not be a chore. During her investigation in A is for Alibi, Kinsey discovers that Laurence had been involved in a fraudulent scheme with his law partner, Charlie Scorsoni. In her first outing, Kinsey reminded me of a piece of wood that hadn’t been sanded or varnished or even painted for that matter. If you’re looking for another piece of random trivia, the first printing was 7,500 copies, of which about 6,000 were sold.

And despite the fact that Kinsey drives around in her '68 VW 'Bug' and has terrible dietary habits (or maybe BECAUSE of those things), I find that I still really like her character. I was happy and a little surprised at how much I enjoyed rereading 'A is for Alibi' after so many years. The interior was done with polished uneven red-tile flooring, mirrors floor to ceiling, and panels of raw gray wood, hung here and there with clusters of dried corn.Kinsey's approach to detecting was reasonably realistic, I liked the old style feel to everything(was the 1980's really that long ago!

One might wonder why Nikki got only eight years for a premeditated murder, but this is never explained.

Her most intricately plotted novel to date, it is layered in enough complexity to baffle even the cleverest among us. The book is narrated by Kinsey Millhone herself and opens with a perfect intrpoduction of who she is. The darkest and most disturbing case report from the files of Kinsey Millhone, Y is for Yesterday begins in 1979, when four teenage boys from an elite private school sexually assault a fourteen-year-old classmate—and film the attack. If you look back through my book review history you'll see that I read quite a bit of crime fiction.

I enjoyed Kinsey and the storyline was entertaining, especially when the action picked up throughout the second half of the book and I read it in one sitting. You kill people you hate or you kill in rage or you kill to get even, but you don’t kill someone you’re indifferent to. A is for Alibi by Sue Grafton is a gripping mystery novel featuring private investigator Kinsey Millhone. Kinsey begins to suspect that Nikki might have killed Laurence out of jealousy, but she keeps an open mind and continues her investigation. Although Millhone believes she has successfully documented Threadgill's deception, the insurance firm that contracted Millhone to investigate Threadgill moves to pay her claim anyway, citing potential legal costs and complications, including the risk of reprisal. An autopsy and lab tests showed that he’d died as a result of ingesting oleander, ground to a fine powder and substituted for the medication in the capsule he took: not a masterly plot, but one employed to good effect. Grafton said that the series would end with "Z" Is for Zero, but she died before she could begin writing it.
